“This image symbolizes the enduring connection between generations impacted by residential schools. The elder and child come together to form a heart, representing love, healing, resilience, and the strength of cultural identity. It honors survivors, acknowledges the experiences carried across generations, and reflects hope for healing, understanding, and a stronger future for Indigenous communities and generations.”
ARTIST BIO:
"Tansi, my name is Osawaw, a Plains Cree Indigenous artist from Treaty 6 Territory.
I’ve always had a passion for being creative. My journey as an artist began when I received my first canvas and iPad, and I quickly became inspired to create every day. After completing my first commission just a month later, I realized that art could become a career.
My journey hasn’t always been easy. Growing up in poverty and surrounded by gangs and addiction, I eventually became involved in gangs myself and struggled with alcoholism. At 25, I met my first Indigenous male role model who was sober and walking the Red Road. Seeing his journey inspired me to make a change in my own life.
Today, I use my art to share my story, connect with my culture, and inspire Indigenous youth. I want to show the next generation that no matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, you can create a new path for yourself."
