What’s the difference between Carhartt and Carhartt WIP?
We often get questions about how the Carhartt WIP items in our store differ from the Carhartt workwear found at other stores, in different fits, colours, and price points. We’re here to explain the difference between the two so you can make an informed decision on which line is right for you. We think both brands are pretty cool, and here’s why!
Carhartt
Founded in Detroit by Hamilton Carhartt in 1889, as a workwear line known for its reliable & durable qualities. Since then, Carhartt has been owned and operated by the same bloodline.
Created for the working person, “honest value for an honest dollar”, sticking to functional designs with a classic fit.
Workwear & outerwear made for people who work outdoors and in trades.
Carhartt WIP
Founded by Edwin Faeh in 1994, the first to become the exclusive distributor of Carhartt products in Europe. Later, he acquired the license to manufacture Carhartt products outside of the USA. Thus, the first Carhartt WIP collection was born - keeping the quality, durability, and functionality of the original workwear but putting a European twist on it.
Created as a modern streetwear brand with edgier styles & slimmer fits, all while following the latest trends & collaborating with other brands in the world of fashion.
A fashion-forward line made for those drawn to the utilitarian/workwear aesthetic of fashion.
Although both operate under the same name, the initial vision for each line remains. Carhartt, to be the dependable well-known working person’s uniform, and Carhartt WIP, to mix that aesthetic with the world of European fashion and make a statement in the process.
So, why is Carhartt WIP more expensive than Carhartt? Simply because it’s a fashion-brand, whereas Carhartt is a practical, durable workwear brand. They have different purposes and demographics, thus, the price-points vary.
It’s worth noting that as an official retailer, we are required to follow the pricing guidelines given to us from Carhartt WIP. As of now, Hardpressed is the exclusive stockist of Carhartt WIP in Saskatoon. And no, you won’t find the same jackets, shirts, or pants at department workwear stores - although some items may look similar, the fit, material, style, and logo will be a few of the differences you’ll notice.
That being said, there's still a whole lot to love about both brands. Whether you gravitate towards Carhartt WIP or Carhartt branded pieces, you're sure to reap the benefits of function, durability and quality in every garment.
